A vitamin D test measures the level of vitamin D in your blood. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium and is important for healthy bones, muscles, and the immune system.
What does the test measure?
The test measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the main form of vitamin D circulating in the blood. This is the most reliable way to check whether your vitamin D level is adequate, low, or high.
How to prepare
No special preparation is needed. You do not need to fast. The sample is a blood draw, and the result is usually available the next day.
What a low result can mean
A low vitamin D level is common and can contribute to bone weakness, muscle aches, and tiredness. Over time, severe deficiency can lead to conditions such as rickets in children or osteomalacia, a softening of the bones, in adults. A high level is less common and usually results from taking too much supplement. Your doctor will interpret your level in the context of your symptoms and health.
When is it ordered?
Doctors order a vitamin D test for bone pain, muscle weakness, or a history of fractures, and for people at higher risk of deficiency, such as those who get little sun exposure or have certain digestive conditions. It is also commonly included in health packages.
